The Calanque de Sormiou

Monday 25th March

The Calanques of Marseille are an area of outstanding beauty that run along the coast from Marseille. They are made of limestone and were created by a tectonic vertical thrust 1.5million years ago creating hills and caves - some of which were filled with water at the end of the last ice age.  Much of the area can only be visited by boat but some parts can be walked.  We decided to walk the Calanque de Sormiou.  It started reasonably close to our camping spot so we could leave the van safely for a few hours. This was just as well as the walk which was listed as 2.75 hours took us closer to 4 hours.  It was more difficult than we anticipated with some steep climbs but also much of the surface was a shale of broken limestone and it was easy to lose one's footing.  I slipped once and feel down and the surface was not good for Mike's knee.  However we were rewarded by some lovely views as fortunately the weather was much brighter today.  We had left at 10am with plenty of water (which all went) but no food so by the time we got back at 2pm we were ready for our lunch.  After this we set off on the next stage of our travels, taking the coast road to St. Tropez.  After travelling a couple of hours we spotted a launderette by the side of the road.  We had lots of washing again so we pulled in, did our wash, went to the supermarket and got some cash.  It cost us about 90 minutes so that it was dark as we approached St Tropez. As it was Easter week Jacqui was concerned that we would not get onto our aire but it turned out that there was plenty of room.  Thankfully we settled down for supper and had an early night.  It had been a strenuous day!
